The hospital
Care where therewas none
Vistex Hospital in Masarhi, Patna district, Bihar, serves a catchment population of 400,000 people.
It sits in the Fatuha block, where there are no other functional health facilities within a 15 km radius and the city's referral hospitals are about 2.5 hours away. Around 300 people visit every day from 50 villages, most of them from the Mahadalit community, and the hospital cares for about 30 inpatients at a time.
Vistex is one of the 40 health facilities prioritised by the Indian government for urgent improvement. It has modern emergency and diagnostic facilities, is recognised by the local health department, and played a critical role for the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
