What happened

A wall of waterfrom the mountains

Early on 26 August 2026, a sudden surge of water from across the border, linked to an upstream ice collapse, flooded villages along a 72 km stretch of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.

Homes, markets, roads, bridges and hydropower plants were swept away. Six districts were affected: Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan in Bagmati Province, and Gorkha and Tanahun in Gandaki Province. The Government of Nepal declared 15 municipalities disaster crisis-affected areas for three months.

With roads and bridges gone, many families were cut off from markets and health care just as the risk of water-borne and mosquito-borne disease rose.

Our response

Relief kits forflood-hit families

On 29 September 2026, Doctors For You, working with local partners LACCoS and YONSED, ran a relief distribution for families affected by the flood.

Each household received a kit chosen to protect health in the weeks after the water receded: mosquito nets and repellent against vector-borne disease, umbrellas for the monsoon, water bottles and dispensers for safe drinking water, and hygiene and household essentials for families who had lost everything.

Our volunteers walked each family through what was in their kit and how to use it.

Nuwakot was one of the districts hit hardest in both 2015 and 2026.

After the 2015 earthquake, DFY ran a 13-day field clinic in Nuwakot and treated more than 1,000 patients. Read about our 2015 earthquake response.
